What’s it like?

I see expectant mothers post on the Down Synrome groups after their ultrasound shows their baby has Downs and they are trying to decide what to do…

What is it like to raise a child with Downs Syndrome?
I can tell you, because I know…

It’s like the sun rise.

Even after the longest nights, the sun rises, and warmth and joy flood everything it touches.

I am not a morning person. I stumble out of bed after a sleepless night, and before I can even see straight, enthusiastic arms have found their way around my neck.
“Goodmorning, Mama! ” She shouts in her not so quiet voice.

“Its a happy day!” she says, just about every day.

She chatters as  I help her dress, and as I bend over to comb her hair, she puts her little hand on both sides of my face looks into my eyes and whispers, ” Mama, You Beautiful.”
Not flattery, but genuine …straight from her heart.

When she looks at the world, she sees everything beautiful.

Her words are like the warm sun shining on my face throughout the day. ” Mama I misses you..
Mama I loves you,
Mama I hold you..
Mama, you are a good girl.”

Joy encompasses her, and she drags it everywhere she goes, lighting up every room, as she throws her arms to the side and announces her presence, so the rest of the world can rejoice that she has arrived.

When she hugs it’s from deep within her heart, when she compliments its genuine, and when she giggles, the world comes alive.

Whats it like to raise a child with Downs Syndrome?

Its the warm sun shining on your face.

Its a breath of fresh air in a very hard and critical world.

It’s something so sweet and so pure that it takes your breath away.

It’s not a mistake, it’s a miracle.
